How is My Student Doing?

As a parent of a middle school student we know that you have many questions about how your student is progressing. As you know, our teachers use an online grading system called Jupiter Grades. This online grading system allow parents and students 24/7 access to teacher’s grade books. In addition, each student receives two progress reports prior to their final semester grades in December.

The progress report for Quarter Two will be distributed on Friday, October 31. Students will receive these grades in their 6th period classes. It is important to recognize that when students receive their grades on October 31 there are only seven weeks of school left to improve any “D” or “F” grades. Should you have any questions or concerns about your student’s progress please contact your student’s teacher and/or counselor.

Intervening when Students are Not Progressing

Like our parents, we are very concerned when students are not making adequate progress. At Mar Vista Academy, we have two main school-wide interventions:

  • Viking Success Program, which offers a focused re-teaching on specific content related to an assessment
  • Saturday Academy, provides an opportunity for students to get in-depth tutoring experience with a teacher in the course he/she is struggling with.

Beyond these school-wide programs we offer, I know that many teachers have provided assistance before and after school as well as lunch. Please know that we want to work with all of our parents/guardians to develop partnerships that lead to your student’s success!

Compact for Success

On Saturday, October 25 all 7th graders are invited to join us on our annual field trip to San Diego State University! At Mar Vista Academy our goal is to prepare all students to be college and career ready and we feel that this field trip is critical to your student’s future success. During this field trip 7th grade students will learn about the Sweetwater Union High School’s Compact for Success program with San Diego State University (SDSU) that guarantees YOUR student’s admission to SDSU if they achieve specific academic benchmarks. In addition to a dynamic opening session, students will be able to take a tour of the campus and learn about the fantastic programs they can be part of at SDSU. Your student has already received a permission slip for this event but if you need another one please click on the permission slip link.

Attendance

Current research on the impact student attendance has on overall achievement found that students who miss more than ten days of school a year do not attain the same level of achievement as students who attend more regularly.

We understand that when students are ill they need to stay home and get better. However, we want parents and students to know that we provide a variety of ways students can make-up work and attendance when they miss school.

Because all students have iPads, we encourage students to access Canvas for work and assignments they miss when they are absent from school. Students can also get assistance from a certificated teacher when they attend Saturday Academy. Saturday Academy also provides an opportunity to make-up missing days, especially if they are working towards perfect attendance. We will be holding Saturday Academy for 7th and 8th graders on October 18 and Saturday Academy for 8th graders on October 25. If you have any questions or concerns about your student’s attendance please contact the school at 628-5100.

 Family Literacy Night

Family Literacy Night will take place on Tuesday, October 28. Bring your family and friends for an evening full of reading, crafts and refreshments. The theme for Family Literacy Night will be Halloween and Día de Muertos. We hope that you will join us for this fun event.
